... it may not be amiss to mention some other absurdities ... I will commence with what are termed Gothic-pattern papers, for hanging walls, where a wretched caricature of a pointed building is repeated from the skirting to the cornice in glorious confusion, - door over pinnacle, and pinnacle over door. This is a great favourite with hotel and tavern keepers (page 25).
