Berkeley Sutcliffe Designs

This collection includes some 180 designs for pantomime and for the famous Five past Eight shows.

The Five Past Eight Shows began in 1955, following on from the success of the former Half Past Eight Shows. The King's Theatre was the host of these shows in Edinburgh, whilst the Glasgow shows had moved to the Alhambra Theatre. The Alhambra productions were move lavish than earlier shows, and the audiences came in their droves. However by the late 50s and early 60s a mixture of high production costs and the draw of television saw the demise of shows like Five Past Eight.
