James Scotland Papers


Papers of the renowned teacher, playwright, actor and director James Scotland (1917-1983) including hand and typewritten manuscripts for stage plays both published and unpublished, reel to reel tapes (1950-), press cuttings, programmes and directors notes. Also includes scripts for radio shows including Listen to Speedy, Jim & Mary, and Seventeen Sauchie Street (1948-1960) and sketch and point numbers, these form the focus of his Variety and Revue work, and a great deal of the work had first performances in the Citizens Theatre Christmas Shows of the 1950s.

The collection also includes book manuscripts, educational material and papers relating to his academic career.

Born in 1917 in Dennistoun, James Scotland was a student of the university from 1934 to 1946 (including a break for war service), over which time he gained three separate First Class Honours Degrees.  In 1949 he joined the staff of Jordanhill and from 1961-1983 was the principal of Aberdeen College of Education.
