Design Arguments and their Critics - Contesting the Existence of God

Wednesday 24 Novermber, 1:30-2:30pm

This live talk, with Q&A, will examine the strengths and weaknesses of design (or teleological) arguments: one of the most tenacious philosophical arguments for the existence of God. The talk will engage with the Existence of God topic from the RMPS Highers specification. We will evaluate arguments recommended by the specification, namely those of William Paley, and consider different interpretations of those arguments. More recent design arguments will also be discussed (e.g. Richard Swinburne’s). Our focus will be on how students can demonstrate knowledge, understanding, analysis, and evaluation in their assessed work on this topic.
