This course offers students a placement based introduction to the processes involved in planning and producing worship resources including sermons, liturgies and rituals.

One hour weekly across both semesters. One 20 hour placement by arrangement.

Coursework:

■ Critical Reflection on 2 sermons  1,000 words (15%)

■ Critical Reflection on one liturgy or ritual 750 words (10%)

■ An essay on preaching methods of 1,500 words (25%)

■ An essay on liturgy and the human life cycle of 1,500 words (25%)

■ A critical self-evaluation of their participation in the reflection group including a critically annotated resources list demonstrating the reading and e-resources consulted during the course of 1,000-1,000 words (25%)

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ provide a placement context in which students can participate in the development of liturgy and gain experience in preaching and leading worship.

■ introduce students to contemporary understandings of the construction, presentation and reception of worship materials.

■ use and generate resources which are helpful in the construction of worship

■ explore the significance of worship and ritual in relation to the human life cycle.

■ support the development of writing, presentation and evaluation skills through active engagement in a worship reflection group lead by an experienced practitioner.

■ provide detailed feedback on the student's practice as a worship leader

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate understanding of contemporary literature on the construction, presentation and reception of worship material and be able to evaluate these in relation to their own practice.

■ Employ a variety of web-based supports for the construction of worship material

■ Construct liturgical material that is specifically related to a significant phase in the human life cycle.

■ Effectively self-assess their own practice as a worship leader and supportively critique the work of colleagues.

■ Respond to feedback on their participation as a worship leader from an experienced practitioner.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
