Short Description

This course builds on the linguistic skills acquired in Basic Greek and introduces students to reading select works of Greek literature in the original language. It is designed for students who have entered direct to level two, but who have needed to take Greek 1B for additional linguistic consolidation, and provides a path back to level two.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ begin reading continuous literary texts in the original language

■ develop reading skills with both prepared and unprepared material

■ consolidate knowledge and understanding of Greek grammar and syntax

■ expand your Greek vocabulary

■ interpret texts through close linguistic, literary and historical analysis 

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ translate continuous passages of straightforward Greek into English

■ translate accurately any prescribed passage from the set texts

■ use lexica and commentaries for independent reading of texts

■ recognise and classify linguistic forms from prepared and unprepared material

■ relate texts to their historical and cultural contexts 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
