This course builds on text-reading skills acquired at level two and proceeds to more detailed critical investigation of texts, along with more advanced language skills.

This course aims to:

■ introduce detailed study of texts in the Latin language

■ Familiarise students with a range of genres and their conventions and idioms

■ Develop essay-writing and commentary skills in relation to Latin texts

■ Deepen acquaintance with the Latin language and prrovide strategies for approaching unfamiliar texts in Latin

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ translate prepared Latin texts from a range of genres into English, with due regard to idiom and register

■ identify literary, historical and cultural points in the text and comment insightfully upon them

■ develop an extended critical argument about two or more texts in essay form

■ translate from texts that have not been prepared with due regard to idiom and register

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
