This course will develop analytical skills rehearsed at Level One and Level Two. Successful students will demonstrate significant progression in terms of their basic knowledge of film theory, key critical writing in film studies and in the analysis of moving image texts. The course will support students' work in other honours options and offer preparation for the Senior Honours dissertation.

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ develop the skills of close textual analysis

■ explore the relationship between text and context

■ consider frameworks for the 'interpretation' of texts

■ explore the role and function of textual analysis for the study of film

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ apply close textual analysis to a variety of film texts and analyse them critically with careful consideration of relevant contexts

■ identify and critically employ appropriate interpretive frameworks in their writing

■ present ideas critically, clearly and coherently in academic essays and other written formats

■ demonstrate improved expertise in writing for both an academic and non-academic audiences

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components of the course's summative assessment.
