I am passionate about capacity building and supporting colleagues and research students to succeed in their careers. As a Visiting Professor in the School of Education, I look forward to working with staff and students to develop cutting-edge grant applications, manuscripts and impact initiatives, and to discussing opportunities for research collaborations in Hong Kong and Asia. I am excited about working with the talented staff and students in the Culture, Literacies, Inclusion and Pedagogies Research and Teaching Group, but will also welcome the chance to get to know other colleagues across the School of Education.

I am Chair Professor of Intercultural Education and Associate Dean (Research & Research Students) in the Faculty of Education and Human Development at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) where I also lead the cross-faculty Diversity, Equity and Social Inclusion research group. I was previously Professor and Chair of Education, and lead the Critical Studies of Youth research group at Deakin University and Professor of Education and foundational Director of the Centre for Educational Research at Western Sydney University.

Having trained as a sociologists and historian race relations, my research has focused on how cultures shapes difference, lives and relationships to marginalize individuals by race, poverty and health, and how policy can build social and educational inclusion and equity. I am currently working with ethnic minority and gender/sexuality academics and activists on the cultural challenges of social justice in Hong Kong. I have also published extensively on doctoral education, doctoral supervision and research ethics.

I have led major projects and policy-driven research funded by the Australian Research Council, the Hong Kong University Grants Council, government, and non-government organizations including professional teachers’ associations. I have authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, including five books (one translated into Portuguese, Japanese, French and Hebrew) and delivered more than 50 keynote and invited addresses at local, national and international symposia.

I am a former President of the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) and the Asia-Pacific Education Research Association (APERA), the overarching regional body for education research associations. I served on the Research Assessment Exercise Panel (Education) for Hong Kong (2014), am a member of the Hong Kong Research Grants Committee (Education) (2018-2021) and an Expert on the European Commission Research and Ethics Assessment Panel (since 2015).
