Sutton Trust Summer School

If you are in S5 (in Scotland), Year 12 (in England and Wales) and Year 13 (in Northern Ireland), attend a state-funded school and would like to find out what university is really like, then our Sutton Trust Summer School is for you.

 

There are four programmes to choose from:

Arts & Humanities

Our Arts & Humanities programme brings together courses in the Schools of Critical Studies, Culture & Creative Arts, Humanities and Modern Languages & Cultures.  You will experience sessions by our world-leading English Language and Linguistics staff, Scotland’s leading centre for Music research and the fascinating world of Archaeology.  Visit our on-campus Hunterian Art Gallery and find out more about Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, and contemporary Art with our History of Art experts and add to your language portfolio with some Beginners German. Morning sessions will involve lectures and seminars on our World-Changing campus, afternoon sessions will give you the opportunity to meet with existing undergraduate students and experience student life, and we finish off the day with a variety of sporting and social activities both on the campus and around the vibrant city of Glasgow!


Engineering

Our Engineering course gives you the opportunity to be a part of the oldest School of Engineering in the UK.  Experience some of our core engineering disciplines - Aeronautical, Civil, Electronics & Electrical and Mechanical – as well as projects in some of our specialised programmes – Biomedical, Product Design, Electronics with Music and Civil Engineering with Architecture.  Our classes are led by our world-leading research and teaching staff who working at the cutting edge of technology in our state of the art facilities.  Morning sessions will involve lectures and practical lab sessions, afternoon sessions will give you the opportunity to meet with existing undergraduate students and experience student life, and we finish off the day with a variety of sporting and social activities both on the campus and around the vibrant city of Glasgow!


Medical Sciences

Our Medical Sciences course gives you a unique opportunity to combine Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry and Life Sciences study in one week!  Bringing together internationally renowned experts and state of the art facilities, you will experience our innovative teaching and world-leading research.  Study in our award-winning Wolfson Medical Building which houses a Clinical Skills area complete with fully-equipped ward, meet staff and students from the UKs second largest Dental School and find out more about our Internationally accredited School of Veterinary Medicine which includes our Small Animal Hospital, Weipers Centre Equine Hospital and the Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health and Welfare.  We bring all this together with lectures and practical activities in our extensive School of Life Sciences which includes courses in Animal Biology, Biomolecular Sciences, Human Biology and Infection & Immunity.  Add to this afternoon sessions which give you the opportunity to meet with existing undergraduate students and visit William Hunters collections amassed during his career as anatomist, obstetrician and doctor in our World famous Hunterian and Anatomy Museums, and finish off the day with a variety of sporting and social activities both on the campus and around the vibrant city of Glasgow!


Social Sciences

Our Social Sciences programme brings together sessions in the world-leading School of Social and Political Sciences and the world-renowned Adam Smith Business School.  Named after the father of economics, the Adam Smith Business School includes Accountancy & Finance, Business & Management and Economics.  We bring this week together with sessions with our innovative and influential Politics staff and students.  Morning sessions will involve lectures and seminars on our World-Changing campus, afternoon sessions will give you the opportunity to meet with existing undergraduate students and experience student life, and we finish off the day with a variety of sporting and social activities both on the campus and around the vibrant city of Glasgow!


Attending our Summer School will give you a useful and fun introduction to student life and university level study. The programme in 2019 will be held week beginning Sunday 7th until Friday 12th July 2019.

You will attend lectures and seminars with our world-leading academic staff and postgraduate students alongside information sessions and workshops on applying to university, careers, study skills, finance and student support. You will also experience student life by taking part in sports and social activities both on campus and around the vibrant city of Glasgow!

Applications are now open and you should do this on the Sutton Trust Summer School website at summerschools.suttontrust.com. Applications close at 5pm on 28th February 2019.

The more criteria you meet, the more likely you are to secure a place:

  • In the first generation of your family to attend university
  • Eligible for free school meals
  • Attend a school or college with a below-average A-level or Higher point score and/or a low rate of progression to higher education
  • Live in a neighbourhood with a low rate of progression to higher education and/or a high level of socio-economic deprivation
  • Have achieved at least five A or 7 grades at GCSE, or five A or B passes at National 5, and where applicable, taken subjects relevant to the course applied for.

The knowledge you gain at the Sutton Trust Summer School will help you to decide if university is the correct route for you.
