This course introduces the work of five great 20th-century artists and their contribution to the history of art. Each meeting will be devoted to an individual artist, placing their achievements within the context of their life and milieu and influence. Wherever possible, we will highlight works held in Scottish collections. The artists featured are: Alberto Giacometti, Robert Morris, Robert Smithson, Lygia Clark, and Rachel Whiteread. 

Areas you'll explore include: 

  • Lives and works of major artists as well as individual major works by each artist. 
  • Artworks set within the broader historical, cultural and social developments of their time. 

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to: 

  • Demonstrate familiarity with each artist’s life, career and art and contextualise the artists’ key achievements. 
  • Interpret and discuss how the artworks of the selected artists were influenced by previous masters and how their art influenced future generations of artists. 

Who is this course for?

Anyone who has an interest in art history and in particular 20th century artists.     


This is a non-credit class, so would not contribute to any qualifications. 

Mode of study

A mixture of lectures/seminars delivered live on Zoom.  


Although the course is no-credit bearing, it is still an ideal introduction to the subject.
