Modern art 1900 - 1950

Art in the first half of the 20th century can be both exhilarating and daunting. This course will demystify the art of this period, providing a focussed analysis of some of the major movements, artists and ideas during this time. Students will be introduced to the important debates and the controversies which surround such a wide variety of art and will be guided through the huge shifts in how art was made, what it was made from, and even what constituted an artwork in the first half of the 20th century. The course will begin with artists such as Picasso and conclude with early abstract expressionism.
