Research Interests

Professor Richard Hartley is a chemical biologist. The Hartley group uses synthetic organic chemistry to unlock the secrets of biology and treat disease.  He is an expert in the chemistry that occurs in mitochondria and in redox signalling.  His group is the chemical core of multidisiciplinary teams tackling the biggest problems in medicine. Professor Hartley has helped to pin down the cause of reperfusion injury in stroke, transplant and heart attack; to explain why resting metabolic rates vary naturally; to test the free radical theory of aging; and to explain how inflammation is switched off by the mitochondrial metabolite, itaconate.  Profesor Hartley was the originator of the ‘Protection Hypothesis’ in behavioural ecology. The impact of his work is clear.  Molecular probes developed in his lab are now marketed worldwide by Cayman Chemical and by other companies. These include MitoB and MitoParaquat. A spin out company, Antoxis, arose from his research.
