Biography

I am a political scientist specialising in public opinion, political behaviour, latent variable modelling, and survey methodology.  My recent articles are on the topic cross-nationally comparing the public's foreign policy attitudes.  During the Covid-19 crisis, I utilised this background to study public attitudes towards vaccination.  Currently, I am co-investigator on a jointly funded ESRC-Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) project on measruing public trust in the post pandemic environment.

Since arriving in the United Kingdom in 2007, I have held a variety of administrative roles in higher education including Associate Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Essex (2011-2014) where I helped to launch their pioneering PhD traning program, Proficio.  Between 2017 and 2020, I was Head of the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Strathclyde.  In 2020, I moved across this beautiful city to serve as Dean of Learning and Teaching for the College of Social Sciences at Glasgow during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Aside from teaching wonderful students and interacting with my colleagues in the School of Social and Political Sciences at Glasgow, I look forward to working to build the College's partnerships with North Americans and North American institutions in 2022-2023.  If you're an American or Canadian student interested in studying one of the undergraduate or postgraduate courses in our College or an American academic looking to partner with Glasgow, please do not hesitate to reach out for more information (also happy to hear from others!)

Aside from academic research, I enjoy giving talks and presentations at organisations such as the Department for International Development (now the FCDO), the OECD, NATO, The Prime Minister's Policy Unit, and the US Embassy, London.  My consulting activity relates to survey design and statistical analyses, and those with needs in this area should feel free to get in touch.

Early in my career, I taught topics related to American politics and political behaviour and still do, on occasion.  Much of my recent teaching is in research methods and statistics.  At Glasgow, I contribute to our interdisciplinary and fully online MSc in Data Analytics for Government.  My interests in teaching quantitative methods provides me, from time to time, with the opportunity to teach in interesting places such as the Essex Summer School, and at short course workshops at Concordia (Canada), UT-Dallas (USA), Bamberg (Germany), and Kobe (Japan).  In the 2010s, I was part of the Parliamentary Strengthening Project funded by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, where I taught evidence based research design short courses to representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Georgia, Mozambique, and Ukraine.   As a postgraduate student, I assisted with the teaching of research methods at the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute, a program designed to widen participation of those from underrepresented groups across PhD programs in political science.
