Biography
Dr John Marshall is a specialist equine surgeon and a Diplomate of both the European and American Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons. He graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in veterinary medicine in 2003. In 2010, Dr Marshall was awarded a PhD from North Carolina State University for the study of physiology and biotechnology.
Dr Marshall performs both orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery and has a particular interest in the use of kinematics and advanced imaging in equine lameness. He introduced the use of computer-based kinematic lameness diagnosis to the University of Glasgow, the first equine hospital in the UK to offer this service. This was supported by the Chancellor’s Fund of the University of Glasgow.
Research interests
Dr Marshall is a member of the Equine Clinical Research Group investigating a range of diseases affecting the horse. His clinical research focuses on improving equine lameness diagnosis using inertial-sensor based kinematic gait analysis and diagnostic imaging. In collaboration with Dr Lance Voûte (University of Glasgow), the equine clinical research group described the objective assessment of both flexion tests and nerve blocks. Currently, this work is funded by the Geoffrey Serth Charitable Trust (Horse Trust) and Horse Race Betting Levy Board (HBLB). Dr Marshall is investigating the use of electronic medical records and large-scale data analysis to explore a range of equine health problems including colic. This project is in collaboration with Dr Claire Welsh and Dr Tim Parkin (both University of Glasgow) and is currently funded by the Animal Welfare Foundation.
Dr Marshall is investigating equine influenza virus, a major infectious disease of the horse, in collaboration with Dr Pablo Murcia (Centre for Virus Research, University of Glasgow). Together Dr Marshall and Dr Murcia supervise a PhD studentship investigating the role of viral proteins in disease pathogenesis. This project is funded by the HBLB.
