Willie WeirWillie graduated from the University of Glasgow Veterinary School in 1995 and, after spending five years in mixed practice in the North of England, returned to the University on a Wellcome Fellowship. Following secondment to the State Veterinary Service to assist with the Foot and Mouth crisis in 2001, Willie accepted a Ronald Miller Scholarship from the Veterinary School allowing him to pursue a PhD in Molecular Parasitology. Over the last ten years, while based at the Institute of Biodiversity at the University, his research interests have developed in a number of areas including pathogen genetics, population genomics and transcriptomics. He is Principal Investigator on several projects investigating tick-borne pathogens and is currently funded to pursue research in the UK (Scottish Government, HBLB), Turkey (Turkish Research Council) and India (BBSRC). More recently he has developed an interest in identifying transcriptomic biomarkers for equine health and is PI on projects funded by the Wellcome Trust and The Donkey Sanctuary. Willie joined VDS in 2016 as a Clinician in Infectious Disease.

Mike began his career in the human field, in the diagnostic virology laboratory at Ruchill Hospital in Glasgow. Since joining the diagnostic virology unit at the University of Glasgow in 1990 under Professor Os Jarrett, Mike has developed significant expertise in many aspects of feline and canine virology. In addition to managing the diagnostic laboratory, Mike collaborates with leading workers in companion animal infectious disease and has publications in the fields of FIV, FeLV, Chlamydophila felis and feline calicivirus. Mike has successfully employed new technologies in viral diagnosis including PCR and real-time PCR. Most recently, he has optimised the FCoV RT-PCR assay for use as a routine diagnostic assay, which will be the first such assay in the UK.
