Research interests

I am interested in modelling complex social and political systems, such as policy debates, policy making, legislative networks, international conflict, and scientific networks using computational and statistical techniques, including network analysis, regression modelling, and agent-based models. Substantively, my main focus of interest is how environmental or social conflicts and interests are channelled into political outcomes during the policy process.

Supervision

PhD Supervision

I am interested in supervising PhD students with topics related to network science, politics, quantitative methods, and public policy. Topics can have a substantive or methodological focus. Please contact me in autumn each year to discuss your eligibility and funding options for a starting date one year later.

Current PhD Researchers

Ms Laurence Brandenberger, main supervisor since April 2014, University of Bern. Topic: Relational event models for signed bipartite graphs and their application to politics and policy making. Funding: Swiss National Science Foundation.

Ms Annatina Aerne, third supervisor/committee member since 2017, University of St. Gallen. Topic: The Dynamics of Transcultural Management and Governance in Latin America. Funding: University of St. Gallen and Swiss National Science Foundation.

Mr Sebastián Martínez, main supervisor since October 2017, University of Glasgow. Topic: Dynamic Inferential Network Analysis for Public Health. Funding: Lord-Kelvin/Adam-Smith Scholarship.

Ms Ekaterina Tolstukha, main supervisor since October 2017, University of Glasgow. Topic: The Democratic Deficit of the European Union Revisited: A Dynamic Network Analysis of the Institutional Reform Debate in the EU. Funding: CoSS Scholarship.
