Visiting Fellow: Dr Manase Kudzai Chiewshe, University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe

Purpose of Visit: Manase will engage in formal and informal discussions with UofG/Urban Studies staff and PGR students to establish relationships, exchange knowledge, and develop collaborative projects that will extend beyond his visit. 

Manase and Gareth will collaborate and explore new avenues in relation to a) the Culture for Sustainable and Inclusive Peace (CUSP)-funded project on the intersections between popular culture and gender-based violence; b) their shared interest in e.g. the food-livelihoods-urban health nexus in Zimbabwe. 

Manase will also deliver a formal lecture/seminar on Football and Sporting Cultures in Urban Africa, in which he will explore how issues of space, gender, and generation, within an urban setting, are shaped by football; and will facilitate a master class on methods/methodologies for researching corruption with a specific focus on urban land markets in Zimbabwe. 

Bio: Manase Kudzai Chiewshe is a Senior Lecturer in the Sociology Department at the University of Zimbabwe and winner of the 2015 Gerti Hessling Award for the best paper in African studies. His work revolves around around the sociology of everyday life in African spaces with special focus on promoting African ways of knowing with specific interest in gender (identities and intersectionalities), agrarian studies, land and livelihoods.

He is a widely published scholar on agrarian livelihoods, gender and urban lifeworlds. He has contributed to discussions on children and post 2015 agenda. His recent work has concentrated on large scale land deals, land reform and youths in agriculture with a special focus on girls. Manase has published in journals such as Critical African Studies, African Identities, Agenda, Agrarian South and Journal of Asian and African Studies
