The John Smith Centre at the University of Glasgow is thrilled to announce our 2019 conference on Public Service.

Taking place on 19 February the conference will feature a series of panels and roundtables throughout the day, bringing together the best and the brightest voices of academia and politics to discuss representation and the role of public servants.

2.15pm, The Melville Room: Public perceptions of public Service: The launch of our new research initiative

Introduced by Sir Paul Grice, Chief Executive of the Scottish Parliament. Professor Christopher Carman (John Smith Centre Academic Lead) and Fraser McMillan (John Smith Centre Research Associate) will discuss the initial findings of their research into the public perceptions of public service.

3.15pm, Fore Hall: She’s Running! How Women Candidates Can Stand and Succeed

A special roundtable event bringing together politicians, academics, and third-sector practitioners to discuss the representation of women in British politics.

5.45pm, Bute Hall: Guest lecture by the Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH

The conference will culminate with a special lecture from the esteemed former Prime Minister the Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH. Drawing on decades of experience, this hotly anticipated lecture will cover public service and representative politics, informed by both his years in grassroots politics and the corridors of power, and his in-depth understanding of the political machine, offering an evening of unparalleled insight.

The lecture will be held from 17.45– 19.00. Guests will not be admitted without photo ID (i.e. student matriculation card or driving licence). Guests are asked to arrive between 17:00 - 17:40, admittance will not be permitted after this time. In the interests of security, guests may not bring large bags (e.g. rucksacks) into the Bute Hall, however a free bag-drop service will be in operation at the Robing Room from 16:00 onwards. Flash photography is prohibited and may result in guests being removed from the event. This event is delivered by the John Smith Centre for Public Service, the University of Glasgow, and the Elections, Public Opinion, and Parties group at the Political Studies Association.
