The John Smith Centre is recruiting a Director to lead our strategic, research and outreach activities.

Candidates will offer insightful and forward-looking thought leadership to shape an understanding of public service in the modern day by anticipating trends and identifying patterns in data and evidence to shape the Centre’s strategy.

Being the first Director of the Centre offers a unique opportunity to grow and shape a future major contributor in this field. Candidates will offer the necessary vision, drive, ambition and entrepreneurship to ensure the Centre’s long-term impact and success.

The Director will be expected to lead collaborations within University and further afield, with academia and non-academic partners, to further the aims of the Centre. The appointee will be expected to bring research and other funding to the Centre, both to support current work and ensure the Centre’s longer-term sustainability.

The Candidate
  • The successful candidate will be well connected across UK politics, the policy think-tank community and academia.
  • The Director will require gravitas and outstanding communication skills to represent the Centre on an international stage, including in media appearances, and must be comfortable leading from the front in a high-profile role.
  • They will be entrepreneurial and have the appetite and hunger for an exciting but challenging opportunity.
  • They will bring ambition, innovation and drive, with the ability to develop an inspirational vision and strategy to create a new way of governing effectively that puts citizens at the heart of the policy and political process.
