The Athena SWAN Charter was initially established in 2005 to recognise commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in academia. In 2015 the Charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly and not only the barriers to progression that affect can women.
The University of Glasgow is committed to promoting equality of opportunity in all its activities and aims to provide a work, learning, research and teaching environment free from discrimination and unfair treatment. Procedures for advancement, promotion and progression are designed to be fair, transparent and consistent with the University's Equal Opportunities Policies. The University of Glasgow was awarded an Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award in April 2013 and in April 2016 successfully submitted an application for the new Bronze award on the expanded Charter.
The School of Psychology and Institute of Neuroscience & Psychology (SoP+INP) submitted a joint application, under the new Charter, in April 2016 and successfully received their departmental Bronze Award in October 2016. In August 2020, the SoP+INP was awarded an Athena SWAN Silver Award.
