We are partners, along with the Universities of Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Oxford, in managing SuperSTEM, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council National Facility for Aberration-corrected STEM.  This is a national facility with a budget of more than £5M dedicated to providing cutting edge scanning transmission electron microscopy to the UK academic community.

Some of the research of the Materials and Condensed Matter Physics group uses the SuperSTEM facility or is conducted in partnership with SuperSTEM on-site staff or consortium members.  

Dr MacLaren has particularly worked with on-site staff and with external partners including Prof. Ian M Reaney at the University of Sheffield and Prof. Judith L. McManus-Driscoll at the University of Cambridge on projects related to multiferroice perovskite oxides, as well as with Prof. R. Freer at the University of Manchester on microwave dielectrics.  His particular focus has been on the picometre-scale quantification of the structure and chemistry of the atomic structure of nanoscale features and defects in such materials using the exceptionally high quality data that can be acquired at SuperSTEM.

Dr Hage has a particular specialisation on the low loss EELS of graphene nanostructures, and has also worked on a range of other user projects.
