Key Skills
Core Funded
- Expert in immunofluorescent and standard histochemical techniques; light, phase-contrast, differential interference contrast (Nomarski) and confocal microscopy; and with the processing of images and data generated. Expert in the generation of 3D (x, y, z) or 4D advanced confocal applications such as Fluorescence Energy Transfer (FRET), photoactivation, colocalization analysis, and Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP).
- Expert in micro-dissection and preparation of tissue samples for disparate molecular genetic processes such as isolation of RNA/DNA or for use in image acquisition etc.
- Expert in the culture and maintenance of various invertebrate model organisms and the application of novel assay techniques to disparate invertebrate systems. Specialism in Drosophila genetics and various Drosophila experimental/behavioural assays and statistical analyses of subsequent data generated.
- Lab manager & administrative experience including budgetary oversight/purchasing, implementation of health & safety guidelines, training and mentoring of staff and students etc.
Research interests
My research focuses on applying molecular genetic techniques, predominantly using the model organism Drosophila and in particular their Malpighian (renal) tubules, to address fundamental questions in the physiology of cell signalling, transport and stress responses (from environmental, pathogenic, and xenobiotic challenges). I also employ other invertebrate systems, both beneficial and pest species, to examine systemic effects of various challenges in the development of biocontrol systems for food security.
