Research interests

I am research assistant on the Carnegie Research Trust funded project 'Importing Knowledge: Italian Books in Scottish University Libraries', led by Dr Shanti Graheli.

My PhD is on the library of the Scottish physician and collector, Dr William Hunter (1718-1783). I am assessing the contents of his library, and their significance within his wider museum collections. I am also using the materiality of the books themselves to assess the provenance and use of his books. A major part of this project is analysisng Hunter's acquisition of books, especially from the secondhand book trade. I am also interested in other aspects of early modern libraries, particularly their organisation.

My research interests span many areas of print and collecting history and cover the whole early modern period. I am principally interested in:

  • Provenance
  • Book bindings
  • The book trade (particularly the secondhand market)
  • Library history
  • History of collecting
  • Eighteenth-century intellectual history
