The Chevalier dans l'ordre des Palmes académiques is an honorary title bestowed by the French Ministry of Education for eminent service to French education, and exceptional contribution to the dissemination of French culture and language.

Colleagues,  former colleagues, family, friends and students were delighted to witness the awarding of the decorative ribbon to Dougal Campbell by the French Consul, M. Emmanuel Cocher following speeches by Acting Head of SMLC Professor Michael Syrotinski and the Honorary French Consul (French Honorary Professorial Research Fellow) John Campbell. Professor Michael Syrotinski praised Dougal for his exceptional contribution to teaching in French in the School over the years, and for the time he has spent above and beyond the call of duty looking after the legions of students he has taught, advised, and written countless letters of reference for.  Professor John Campbell, a former colleague of Dougal, underlined how richly deserved the award was, and M Emmanuel Cocher explained the history and importance of the Palmes académiques, before pinning the ribbon to Dougal's lapel. The ceremony was followed by a happy reception, including a 'vin d'honneur',  in the Hetherington Building.
