Generous Benefactors and Sad News

Published: 14 December 2020

Thanks to our donors in 2020 for their continued generosity in financing scholarships vital to SMLC student funding, and a sad tribute to our retired staff member and Honorary Research Fellow, and generous benefactor, Dr Peter Davies, who recently died.

In June 2019 the Head of School and the Development and Alumni Office were delighted to host a lunch to celebrate and thank Dr Peter Davies, Honorary Research Fellow, for his generous continued commitment to supporting two Masters by Research scholarships a year within SMLC. Following the lunch, Dr Davies then confirmed he would like to extend the reach of his scholarships, so in 2020-21 there were four Dr Peter Davies Scholarships in total on offer – three within SMLC and one in Gaelic. It is with great sadness we received the the news of Peter's death recently. Peter had been a Senior Lecturer in French who, following his retirement, apart from being such a  generous benefactor to students in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, retained close links with the School and the Stirling Maxwell Centre. He was a lovely person and fine colleague, and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

We were also very sad to learn of the passing of Dr Geoff Woollen in November. Geoff was Reader in French at the University of Glasgow, having arrived in 1972 following studies in Leicester. He is known for his work on the 19c, in particular on Emile Zola, and spent many years working closely with the Emile Zola Society and its Bulletin, as well as publishing on Hugo, Balzac and Rostand. He reached a widespread audience through his tireless editorship of the University of Glasgow French and German Publications series, many of whose volumes were to feature on syllabi worldwide.

Unfortunately, the Modern Languages 1972 alumni reunion planned for autumn 2020 had to be cancelled due to Covid and we hope that it can be rescheduled in the future.
