Biography

I am a Reader in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, University of Glasgow. I have a clinical background in nursing, graduating from the University of Glasgow with a Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) (1st class) in 2001.  I began my research career in 2003 at the University of Stirling and completed my PhD there in 2007.  Since then I have held subsequent research appointments at University of Stirling, Glasgow Caledonian University and Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.  I am an experienced PhD supervisor and examiner.

My research interests include self-management, stroke, person-centred care, implementation science and patient and public engagement with research.  Specifically, much of my research has focussed on the design and development, and implementation of, self-management support approaches and interventions in practice.  In particular, I am interested in how practitioners understand, implement and embed person-centred self-management support into their practice and service provision, and the contexts which enable (or hinder) this to happen in practice.  My programme of research has been developed through funding from a range of grants from significant funding bodies including National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), The Stroke Association, The Health Foundation and the Burdett Trust for Nursing.

I am passionate about patient and public engagement with research and throughout my career, my research efforts have been, and continue to be, underpinned by a desire to undertake meaningful research that speaks to and aligns with people’s priorities.  I collaborate with a range of partners from academia, clinical practice, the voluntary sector and people with long-term conditions and their families.  Through my collaborations I am involved in the roll out and implementation of national self-management strategies and projects.   I currently lead the Supported Stroke Self-Management Network, a network of practitioners, academics, policy makers and anyone with an interest in shaping stroke self-management research and practice, run in collaboration with Kingston/St George’s University, University of Southampton and Glasgow Caledonian University.  I am an elected committee member of the Scottish Stroke Nurse Forum (2013-present).  I am also a member of The Alliance Self-Management Network, the Society for Research in Rehabilitation and the Scottish Non-Malignant Palliative Care Forum.
