Biography

I am Lecturer in the Nursing and Health Care School of the University of Glasgow, having commenced this post in December 2018. Prior to this I had spent several years as a Lecturer in Adult Health, and Depute Programme Lead for BSc Adult Nursing, at University of the West of Scotland. Before moving into Higher Education, I spent two years as a Practice Education Facilitator within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. My clinical background was nearly ten years in Emergency Department nursing, divided between Blackpool and Paisley, latterly being a senior staff nurse/emergency nurse practitioner. Emergency nursing is an area that I remain passionate about and was the focus of both my MSc and Professional Doctorate (ProfD) studies.

My research interests are varied. I’ve been interested in different aspects of the student nurse experience and this began with my MSc which bridged my clinical background with my move into education. My MSc dissertation explored the experiences of student nurses in the Emergency Department. I then built upon this when it came to my ProfD study which was entitled: “A Strange, New World: compassion in the Emergency Department as experienced by student nurses”. I was recently involved in some research around the recruitment and admission of student nurses and midwives to pre-registration programmes of study.  I am about to undertake a study regarding the experiences of LGBT+ people who run with a peer support group.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and review abstracts for the Global Science and Technology Forum’s Worldwide Nursing Conference in Singapore. I have published two book chapters and numerous articles in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. I have also presented at various national and international conferences on a range of different topics. Some of these presentations and articles have been in conjunction with colleagues or with MSc students I have been supervising.
