Joint and Several Responsibility and Liability in International Law

Supervisor

Christian J Tams

Eleni joined Law School in September 2016 as a research associate for international law and a (part-time) LL.M. by research student. She has studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Faculty of Law (LL.B., distinction; LL.M. in International Legal Studies, distinction) and Freie Universität Berlin. She holds an LL.M. from the University of Cambridge, Magdalene College, with specialisation in international law (Class I). She is also registered with the Athens Bar Association (qualification expected in 2017) and has previously practised as a trainee lawyer in Greece, in the fields of labour, criminal and corporate law. As a research associate, Eleni is currently working as an assistant editor for the 3rd edition of The Statute of the International Court of Justice: A Commentary (eds Christian J Tams and Andreas Zimmermann, OUP, forthcoming).

Eleni is also a Reporter for the International Criminal Law section of the Oxford Reports in International Law, and a member of the editorial team for the OUP Research Track on Public International Law. Since 2016, she has joint responsibility for the UK Materials in International Law (UKMIL) section of the British Yearbook of International Law (team headed by Prof Antonios Tzanakopoulos, University of Oxford).

Eleni’s LL.M. by research thesis focuses on the allocation of damage caused by an internationally wrongful act among multiple responsible actors. More specifically, it examines the principle of joint and several responsibility/liability in international law. As a research associate for international law, her primary responsibility is to act as an assistant editor for the 3rd edn of The Statute of the International Court of Justice: A Commentary (OUP) in collaboration with Prof. Christian J Tams. In addition to that, she is involved as a legal researcher in several other projects of the international law research group at Glasgow on general international law, the law of treaties and the law of international organizations. Eleni has written on a range of international law topics, including international economic and criminal law, the role of domestic courts as ‘sources’ and ‘enforcers’ of international law and jurisdictional immunities.
