Stephen Greenhalgh


I am a part time PhD student at the School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Dumfries and also the chief executive of St Catherine’s Hospice in Lancashire.  I commenced my PhD in October 2017.

I am a member of the Glasgow End of Life Studies Group.

Thesis Title

The Future of UK Hospices


My research is looking at change in English hospices through the lens of hospice chief executives.



Stephen was appointed as Chief Executive in 2005 and is responsible to St Catherine’s Board for all hospice activity including: care and support for patients and families; knowledge exchange,education and skills; community involvement, fundraising, lottery, communications and catering;finance, business and technical services.

Stephen chairs the NW Hospice regional meeting and served as a trustee on the national body, Hospice UK from 2013-17.

Stephen’s qualifications include an MA in Integrative Counselling and Psychology from the University of Manchester; a BA (Hons) in Theology; and registration as a commercial mediator.
