Research interests

Research Interests

The focus of my research group is two-fold. First, we are interested in the population biology and molecular evolution of bacterial pathogens with a view to understanding how these pathogens adapt to, and cause disease in, particular host species. In particular, we are interested in the role that bacteriophages play in bacterial evolution and in the emergence of new pathogenic strains. Second, we are interested in studying the molecular interactions between bacterial pathogens and their hosts. The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria is at the interface of pathogen and host and we are interested in the roles of outer membrane proteins in the disease process (e.g. adherence and colonization, biofilm formation, iron uptake, etc). To address these questions, we are developing tools for the molecular dissection of the outer membrane and we are exploring the diversity, structure and functions of selected outer membrane proteins. Respiratory tract pathogens are a major focus of our work and we are also developing organ culture and tissue-engineering approaches to allow us to study host-pathogen interactions within the lung. Our research is focused on four important Gram-negative pathogens. Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida are respiratory tract pathogens that cause a range of economically important infections in cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry; P. multocida also infects humans. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a seafood-borne human pathogen that is a major cause of traveller’s diarrhoea and gastroenteritis worldwide. Yersinia ruckeri is a pathogen of salmon and trout and is responsible for significant economic losses to the fish-farming industry.
