Dr Abigail Jenkins

Biography

Abigail Jenkins (she/they) studies television and popular culture. Their work is centred in feminist studies of media with an emphasis on marginalised identities and embodied affects. They are currently focused on the ways in which fat and plus-size bodies are represented, performed, and discussed in British and American television.  

Research interests

Abi's research is concerned with popular television and mass culture, taking an intersectional feminist perspective toward contemporary screen media. Coming from a film studies background, Abi conducts autoethnographic inquiry and performs feminist textual analysis of a range of television texts.   Key areas of interest include reality TV, millennial television, representations of fatness, queer studies, and gender studies. 

Abi has a range of experience in applying intersectional research to teaching practices. She co-developed the first online Master's course for Gender History in 2023 and leads the Widening Participation Summer School Film and Television course.
