You might want to check for charter flights as well as scheduled flights for cheap fares. Easyjet fly from Manchester and London Gatwick to Heraklion. Crete Travel have excellent information on flights. Ferries sail from Athens Port, Pireas, daily to Rethymno. Crete Travel have timetables.
