Biography

Michael obtained a B.Sc. in Psychology and then an M.A. in Social Research at the University of Leeds. He joined the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the University of Glasgow in July 2006 to work on the longitudinal Twenty-07 Study where the focus of his work has been on the development of social inequalities in health, especially mental health, across the life course.

In 2014 Michael completed a CSO Doctoral Training Fellowship looking at the influence of socioeconomic factors in how problems with smoking, drinking and mental health develop over the transition to adulthood, and is now working as a Research Fellow on the Measurement and Analysis of Socio-economic Inequalities in Health programme.

Research interests

Current research interests include: inequalities over the lifecourse; smoking and drinking behaviours; mental health; youth transitions; development; longitudinal analysis; and causal inference from observational data.
