Research summary
Elizabeth graduated with an M.B.,B.Ch from the University of Calabar in 1999. She then worked in clinical practice, and volunteered with Pro-Health International, a medical NGO working in West Africa. She started training in Ophthalmology before taking a career break to care for family. Elizabeth completed an MPH in the University of Glasgow in 2011 during which time she became interested in Systems Thinking. In 2017 she took part in a WHO funded Cochrane review on female genital mutilation (FGM) with the Institute of Tropical Disease Research and Prevention, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, and came to appreciate the complex nature of the practice and the challenges in addressing it. Elizabeth is at present undertaking a PhD at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit where her work straddles the Complexity and Relationships Programmes. Her PhD applies Soft Systems Methodology to explore what problem issues or unintended consequences may exist in the response to FGM in Scotland, and in what ways the situation may be improved.
