Public engagement training

Engaging the public in animal research: Wednesday 05 and 12 May 2021 10:00-12:00

Want to present your research to public audiences, but worried you won't be able to field questions about your animal work? Maybe you are concerned about talking to your family or friends about working with animals. Understanding Animal Research are offering two zoom sessions of their popular introductory workshop. This workshop will provided the skills and confidence to talk about animal work with non-scientific audiences, in both formal and informal settings. As a UAR member organisation we have limited free places.

Public Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) workshops and training

If you book any PPIE course and/or are interest in further information about UofG PPIE activities please contact Tracy Ibbotson.

MVLS researchers interested in attending can apply to the MVLS Engagement with Research Fund to support costs.

#PEM21 supports researchers from all disciplines who want to embed public engagement in their research. As the world begins to recover from Covid-19, public engagement with research must reflect the big influences affecting wider society, as well as the academic and research sectors, which include misinformation, digital exclusion, and embedded prejudices and inequalities. Facilitated by leading engagement specialists, the virtual course will feature a mix of expert insights, inspirational case studies, practical sessions and bespoke support for every delegate to craft a personalised public engagement plan.

Three Minute Thesis – Rita Ibrahim Wins for MVLS

Congratulations to our UofG 3MT 2021 WINNER: Rita Ibrahim from IMCSB with her presentation "Diet and Genes: One Size Does Not Fit All". From the clever title, through an enthusiastic and confident presentation, Rita impressed the judging panel and secured the win for MVLS. With support from a large on-line audience all our finalists provided excellent presentations and may offer you some ideas for presenting research to public audiences.

The Ideas Fund

The Ideas Fund is a new grants programme run by the British Science Association and funded by Wellcome is supporting a new approach to funding public engagement with research by supporting communities directly. Anyone interested in applying to the IDEAs Fund is invited to contact MVLS-Engage@glasgow.ac.uk

New contact details for STEM Ambassadors

"STEM Ambassadors in Scotland" is now managed by Scottish Schools Education Research Centre (SSERC) in Dunfermline. This move strengthens the STEM Ambassador programme and offers opportunities for ambassadors to work directly with teachers and align their offerings to teacher CPD and the curriculum. Aileen and Ewa, who supported our UofG STEM activities, both have new SSERC roles and promise the same excellent support to all. New contact details are as follows:

PhD Women Scotland blog seeks contributors

This weekly blog was founded and is still run exclusively by PhD students. It is looking for female/non-binary writers who are studying for, embarking on study, or have recently completed PhD’s at any of the Scottish universities, and wish to contribute an article. The blog may be on any topic and the team are happy to discuss ideas for blog posts from the very light, through to very personal, depending what a contributor wishes to share. Visit the blog

The Big Bounce 12/13 Oct 2021

This Physics event invites proposal from any disciplines that can help showcase the exciting applications of physics to providing solutions to the climate crisis. So a great opportunity for some cross college engagement work.

The Institute of Physics is seeking applications for in-person and online events for their annual festival of physics in Scotland to be held in the Barrowland Ballroom and other venues in the Barras Market area of Glasgow.
