GEMS's instruments can view a wide variety of specimens. Many can be examined simply by attaching them directly to aluminium stubs using double-sided carbon tabs. When sample preparation is necessary, however, GEMS also has excellent equipment and facilities for production of thin section and polished blocks, as well as carbon and gold coaters.
