Girls into Geoscience

Girls into Geoscience

This exciting, free, one-day event is designed to introduce girls from S5 to S6 (GCSE to A level) to the Geosciences. Geoscience is a diverse subject that incorporates aspects of geography, biology, chemistry and physics in which hazards, the evolution of life and our planet, and natural resources (e.g. geothermal, carbon capture and storage, mining and oil and gas) can be studied.

In the morning attendees will attend a series of seminars given by women working in geoscience professions, who will tell their personal stories on how they decided to undertake a geoscience degree and how they use it in their professions. In the afternoon, participants get to choose from a selection of hands on workshops on a range of exciting geological topics ranging from volcanoes, earths past climates, meteorites and changing landscapes within which they will be able to interact with staff and students from the University of Glasgow.

This event is also designed as an informal ‘taster’ for what a day in a geoscience degree at university is like through a series of presentations and hands on workshops that are designed to showcase our lecture theatre and laboratory learning environments, as well as give you the opportunity to explore our campus.

Date: Thursday 1st August 2019

Venue: School of Geographic and Earth Science, University of Glasgow Main campus.

We welcome both school groups and girls who come independent from their schools.
