Our Self-Assessment Team is comprised of 20 people across post-graduate, post-doctorate, professional and academic categories who help us ensure that we have a well-rounded view of how common issues impact different staff groups and career stages.

Our Self-Assessment Team is comprised of 17 people across post-graduate, post-doctorate, professional and academic categories who help us ensure that we have a well-rounded view of how common issues impact different staff groups and career stages.

Adrian Bass – Adrian is a lecturer in Biogeochemistry and has been part of the equality and diversity team since 2019. Adrian is part of a dual career household.

Kate Botterill – Kate joined GES in 2018 as a lecturer in human geography. She joined the committee shortly after to help to challenge the inequalities of working practices and hierarchies. She is especially passionate about addressing issues of race equality, LGBTQ+ and disability rights for students and staff. She is also an informal carer for her partner and manages a long commute.

Dawn Bradshaw – Dawn has been with GES since 2007 as Head of School Administration and leads the DATA group for Athena Swan since 2015 and has co-chaired the Equality and Diversity committee since 2019. She’s hopeful that her work with the committee will be helpful for her management of professional staff in terms of skills and career development and create a work environment that everyone is proud to be part of. She lives in a dual career household with one young daughter and one cat.

Katie Farrell is the Glasgow University Equalities officer that links the GES SAT with the University.

David Featherstone - David is a Reader in Human Geography and have been based in the University of Glasgow since 2009. David has a particular interest in thinking about ways of diversifying curriculum and drawing on different critical voices who have challenged existing dominant ways in which forms of knowledge are shaped. This is informed by a strong engagement with forms of anti-colonial and left scholarship and practice and he is interested in drawing on the insights from these bodies of work in pedagogic practice.

Katja Hržić – Katja has been at GES since moving to Glasgow to start university in 2015 and is currently a PhD student in Human Geography. She is a member of the Equality and Diversity PGR Committee and a GTA representative at the school. She is particularly interested in creating an inclusive environment for early career researchers and addressing the barriers facing international students and staff.  

Megan Kane - Megan is a current PhD student (as part of an ESRC-funded 1+3 studentship) in Human Geography researching the affective and spatial politics of food banking. After completing both her undergraduate and Masters degree in Glasgow, Megan joined the School’s Equality and Diversity committee as a means of becoming active in her interest in feminist and decolonial work. Specifically, Megan is committed to furthering the opportunities for postgraduate researchers and the fostering of accessible and sustainable working practices.

Lazaros Karaliotas – Lazaros joined GES in 2017 as a lecturer in human geography and became a member of the equality and diversity committee soon after. He co-leads the seminars and events group. Lazaros is committed in fostering an inclusive and diverse working and learning environment, with a particular interest in the experiences of international students and staff. This is his first permanent academic position and he has caring responsibilities outwith Glasgow.

Martin Lee – Martin is Professor of Planetary Science and co-Chair of the GES Equality and Diversity committee. He joined the University of Glasgow as a Lecturer in 2000, and became Head of the School in August 2015. Martin is line manager for 35 members of academic staff in the School. He is part of a dual-career household with a considerable daily commute and caring responsibilities outwith Glasgow.

Ellen MacDonald - Ellen has been a PhD student since 2017 and on the PGR committee for 2 years. She is chair of the PGR committee and co-ordinates GES Yoga sessions on Wednesday lunchtimes.

John MacDonald - John joined GES in 2015 as a lecturer in Earth Sciences. He joined GES in March 2015 after two years of postdoc at Imperial College London where he was briefly involved in their Silver Athena Swan award. He took over as chair of DA during 2016. This is his first permanent academic position and he manages a single person household.

Jean McPartland – Jean is a Personal Assistant to the Head of School in GES. She joined the University in 1998 and GES in 2006. She has served on the SWAN@GES SAT as Clerk since its conception in 2012 and was part of the bronze and silver-award application team. Jean is part of a dual career household and has two children.

Pierre-Etienne Martin - Pierre-Etienne is currently studying a PhD in Earth Sciences. Pierre-Etienne joined the School’s Equality and Diversity committee in order to promote an inclusive and diverse working environment.

Hannah Mathers – Hannah was a PhD student and GTA prior to her lectureship in GES. She has studied part time due to caring responsibilities and experienced precarious contracts.

Miza Moreau – Miza Moreau joined GES in 2019 as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Environmental Design and Planning. Having followed a less traditional academic path, Miza is interested in advancing the ways in which the university reflects the diversity of the public that it serves.  She lives in a multi-national, dual-career household with two primary school-aged children.  

Aine O’Brien - Aine is a PhD student and head of Diversity and Inclusion for UKSEDS, the UK’s national student space society.

Amanda Owen - Amanda is a lecturer in Sedimentology, joining the university in 2017. Amanda has been part of the equality and diversity team since joining the University of Glasgow and wants to promote an inclusive and diverse working environment within the school and wider university. Amanda set up the Girls into Geoscience: Scotland initiative in 2019 in collaboration with other Girls into Geoscience branches across the UK.

Charlotte Slaymark - Charlotte is a Biogeochemistry research technician. She works full time while carrying out a self funded PhD part time in organic geochemistry and palaeoclimatology. She has worked on various types of contracts within the University and outwith since 2016, and has managed three jobs at times to support her household. She is passionate about inclusivity in STEM and mentoring others. 

Rhian Thomas - Rhian is a senior lecturer in physical geography and freshwater science.  She was involved in the Athena Swan team that received the silver award. She lives in a dual working household with 3 young children, 2 cats and a dog. It's not a quiet house.

Jaime Toney - Jaime is a Professor in Environmental and Climate Science. She joined GES as a PDRA in 2011, was a founding member of the Athena SWAN Self Assessment Team in 2012 and was part of the core writing team for our Bronze (2014) and Silver (2017) awards. She is a single parent with a Uni-aged daughter.
