About to MyStuff

What is MyStuff?

MyStuff is an online tool based around moodle that allows you to keep your own music, video or data files on the internet and share them with other MyStuff users. Its main purpose is to be a networking and personal development tool.

Why should you want to use MyStuff?

The functions within MyStuff have several benefits for students:

  • Being an online tool, MyStuff can act as a repository for files that can be accessed from any computer. This enables you to do coursework on-campus, upload it and have it available at home, or vice-versa.
  • Using the forms that are ready made in MyStuff can increase your ability to reflect on your personal progress.  One form you may wish to use is the Knowledge and Skills profile, accessible via Quick Links > Add new stuff > My development > Knowledge and Skills Profile
  • Keeping conscientious records of how you progress and develop can help you to verbalize your achievements, a vital skill in any job application process.
  • The reflective nature of the material will encourage you to be more mindful of what you are actually doing, increasing your awareness of yourself and your actions.
  • MyStuff can provide detailed action plans for you to achieve your goals, be they academic, personal or work related.

What can you do with MyStuff?

  • MyStuff allows you to upload all types of files (data, video, audio and image). You can upload as many as you like, the only limit being a 500Mb allowance for each account.
  • Your home page is your personal workspace. You can do anything you want with it and it is completely private.
  • MyStuff offers the ability for you to produce a wide range of material such as web compilations, study plans and CVs.
  • As already mentioned, the files that you upload to your account are available anywhere there is an internet connection.
  • The material you store is your own and private, unless you decide to share it with another user. In this case you still have control over the material and can decide to stop sharing with other users if you wish.
  • A pin board function is provided so that you can highlight any material that you think deserves special attention.
  • All material can be 'tagged'. This means that the material can be assigned one or many tag words that will appear in the tag cloud on your MyStuff home page. For example, coursework for an Applicable Maths tutorial is uploaded. This could be tagged with 'Applicable Maths' and 'tutorial'.  These two words would then appear in the tag cloud and if you click on them all entries that are tagged with that same word will be displayed for you.
  • Material can also be assigned a status. The automatic one is ‘tagless’, which is given to material that you do not assign a tag. 'Locked' material is still viewable but cannot be edited or deleted. 'Archived' content can only be viewable through the Archived folder, so it will disappear from the home page and all other views. Material marked as 'Deleted' will not be deleted instantly. Instead it will be purged at midnight to give you until then to change your mind.
  • As material is added the date is noted and you are able to see what you did in a particular week or month. Also the last few items used will be displayed under 'most recent' on the home page.
  • All material, with the exception of 'Locked', can be edited. You can modify your files in any way you see fit and the new version will take the place of the old one. However, you can decide to view older versions of a particular item and roll-back to them if they wish. The version rolled-back to will then become the most recent version.
