Dr Zhugen Yang
- Research Fellow (Biomedical Engineering)
Zhugen Yang is a NERC independent research fellow, leading a program on lab-on-a-paper for tracking microbial source to improve water quanlity. His research focuses on the development of sensors and devices for rapid diagnostics (e.g. paper-origami device), environment and public health (e.g. community sewage sensors), surface and analytical chemistry.
Prior to this independent personal fellowship, Zhugen was a Research Associate on point-of-care biosensors with Prof Jon Cooper in the Division of Biomedical Engineering, University of Glasgow (UK). Zhugen held a Marie Curie Research Fellow (2013-15) at the University of Bath (UK), after a postdoc (2012-13) on cantilever sensing with Prof Stephen Elliott in Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge (UK).
Zhugen received his PhD (2012) on Chemistry and NanoBiotechnology entitled “3D-microstructed Protein Chip for Cancer Diagnosis” (with Dr E. Souteyrand) from Ecole Centrale de Lyon (ECL) in France, MSc and BEng on chemistry from Sun Yet-sen University (SYSU, 2009) and Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT, 2006) in China.
Zhugen has authored 27 peer-reviewed articles ( H-index 12, retrieved Aug 2017) and one book on Protein Chips, one patent and raised £500k GBP research grant as PI and over £10k travel grants.

Our research focuses on development of sensors and devices (such as optical, electrochemical, mass-sensitive) to address biomedical and environmental issues, for example, rapid diagnosis of infectious disease using paper-origami device, monitoring of environmental and public health with wastewater analysis, protein microarray for multiplexed cancer diagnosis.
