Dr William Peveler

Research interests

Biography

Dr Peveler is a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Fellow working in the Division of Biomedical Engineering. After work with Dr Martin Grossel and Professor Harry Anderson FRS at the University of Oxford for his MChem, Dr Peveler moved to London to undertake a PhD in Chemistry at UCL (Professor Ivan Parkin), as part of the SECReT CDT, for which he was awarded the Ramsay Medal.

Dr Peveler then won an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship and Royal Society International Exchange Grant to undertake 2 years of postdoctoral work with Professors Claire Carmalt and William Rosenberg (UCL/Royal Free Hospital) and Professor Vincent Rotello (UMass Amherst), and subsequently a Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of British Columbia with Professor Russ Algar. Dr Peveler joined the University of Glasgow in 2018 to begin his independent career.      

Research Interests

Dr Peveler's research concentrates on developing the interface between materials chemistry and biology, to create new tools, techniques and diagnostics for biomedical engineering and medicine. Luminescent materials are of particular interest, for their role in sensing and imaging. Current projects involve the synthesis of new luminescent nanomaterials for improved blood testing near-patient, cross-reactive fluorescent sensing arrays as a diagnostic tool, and tailoring nanoparticle surface chemistry to interface with biology.

Supervision

Dr Peveler is keen to hear from potential PhD students with an interest in working on the interface between chemistry and engineering. Potential projects involve the synthesis of functional fluorescent nanomaterials and their application in biosensing arrays, the creation of smart-phone based tools to image and analyse diagnostic tests and the creation and analysis of cross-reactive sensing arrays.
