Biography

Dr. Wei Liu is currently a Lecturer in Transportation Engineering at University of Glasgow. Prior to his position at Glasgow, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering (Transportation) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2014, and his B.Eng. degree in Civil Engineering and B.A. degree in Law both from Tsinghua University, China, in 2010. He was with University of Florida as a visiting PhD student between 2013 and 2014. Dr. Liu mainly works in transport system modeling, transport economics, traffic modeling and simulation, and urban data analytics. In recognition of his research, he has received a Best Paper Award from the International Transportation Economics Association (ITEA) for young scholars in 2015, and has received the Overseas Research Awardsfrom HKUST for 2013-2014. Also, He was the winner of The European Transport Innovation Challenge 2017 under European Commission.

Research Interests

My primary interest is to better understand the urban transportation system, and to develop strategies to improve mobility, reliability and sustainability of the system. As the behavior of the urban transportation system depends on the interactions between human activities and physical characteristics of the infrastructure, my analyses of the system take an interdisciplinary approach that draws on tools from transportation system engineering, traffic flow theory, operations research, economics and data science. Particularly, my research interests cover the following

  • Transportation Network Modeling and Optimization (e.g., roadway network, high-speed railway system, parking network)

  • Transportation Economics (e.g., congestion pricing, taxi industry, carpooling)

  • Transportation Planning and Operation (e.g., charging infrastructures for EVs, bike-sharing systems)
  • Large-scale Traffic and Transport Models (e.g., Macroscopic fundamental diagram)

  • Agent-based Traffic Simulation (e.g., information in transport, connected vehicles)
  • Urban Data Analytics (e.g., smartphone apps data, land-use pattern, sharing system data)
