Research interests

Biography

John Arnold received the BEng degree in Electronic Engineering and the PhD degree from the University of Sheffield, UK, in 1968 and 1974, respectively.

He was a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Queen Mary College, University of London, UK, from 1974 to 1978. In 1978, he was appointed Lecturer at the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, University of Nottingham, UK. In 1985, he was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, University of Glasgow, UK, where he has been Professor of Applied Electromagnetics since 1994. He was Head of Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering from 2003 to 2009.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He is a Member of the URSI Commission B, and served as the UK National Representative for the URSI Commission B from 1991 to 1996.

Research Interests

Mathematical methods in applications to optics, acosutics and electromagnetic wave propagation, particularly nonlinear guided-wave optics and semiconductor lasers. Currently researching the application of methods of algebraic topology and graph theory in computational electrodynamics.
