Facilities

Our research base is enhanced by our extensive array of facilities which provide the unique practical edge needed for our research.  These facilities include:

Water Engineering Laboratory

The University of Glasgow School of Engineering Water Engineering Laboratory provides a range of excellent resources for research studies with focus on water engineering, environmental fluid dynamics, eco-hydraulics, vegetation hydrodynamics, sediment transport mechanics, infrastructure scour and erosion, flow visualisation.

Our facilities are extensively used for pursuing novel research in the above research themes. Our work has been funded by research councils (EPSRC, NERC), esteemed societies (The Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh), industry and SMEs among others. These are accessible depending on funding and collaboration potential. 

Our facilities comprise of state of the art research flumes of specific capacities:

  • a glass sided, tilting, recirculating flume and wave tank (0.9m wide & 13m long, max flow rate of 0.20cms, slope 1/400 to 1/100)
  • a glass sided, tilting, recirculating flume (1.8m wide & 14m long, max flow rate of 0.15cms)

  • a glass sided, tilting, recirculating flume and wave tank (Armfield S6MKII: 0.3m wide and 12m long, max flow rate of 0.03cms, slope 1/400 to 1/90)

  • a glass sided, tilting, recirculating multipurpose flume (Armfield C4MKII: 0.076m wide and 5m long)

  • a mobile bed recirculating flume and flow visualization tank (Armfield S2: 0.6m wide & 5m long, max flow rate of 0.015cms) Manousos Lab 3

Further a range of options for comprehensive flow diagnostics are available, involving the following notable equipment (with appropriate accessories): 

  • Particle image velocimeters (PIV, Dantek Dynamics)
  • Acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP, Nortek VectrinoII) and velocimeters (ADV Sontek & Nortek Vectrino I)
  • Field high resolution velocimeters (micro-ADV Sontek)
  • Turbidity sensors (OBS-3, among others)
  • Flow anemometers, vernier hook and point gauges (digital/electronic and analog)

 

Lab1 from Manousos

The Water Engineering lab also has hydraulic flumes and benches for laboratory demonstrations (located at the Tuck Lab, James Watt Building):

  • a mobile bed and flow visualisation tank for observation of geomorphic effects of flows
  • a movable bed, hydraulic flow demonstrator for demonstration of various flow profiles
  • a hydraulic bench for demonstration of flow over weirs
  • a Bernoulli's bench apparatus for demonstration of fundamental Hydraulic principles
  • a centrifugal pump demonstration unit
