The Institute of Refrigeration recently held the 3rd International Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain from the 23rd-25th June 2014. This conference was attended by over 160 delegates from across the globe. Adam McConkey and Andrew Poon-King, both final year MEng students, finished as runners up for the best paper by a student author on the theme of Sustainability. Their paper was titled "Heating Glasgow University with River Sourced Heat Pumps". In this study, Adam and Andrew looked into the feasibility of using the River Kelvin as a low grade heat source. They also analysed the economic and environmental advantages of using a heat pump system as compared to other heating technologies.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Star Refrigeration, and supervised by Dr Zhibin Yu.
