Dr Steven L Neale has been awarded £260k to explore the assembly of electronic components into ciruits using an optical micromanipulation method known as Optoelectronic Tweezers (OET). The project will explore the placement of components smaller than could be handeled with the current state of the art pick-and-place robots which then has the potential to reduce the size of electronic products from consumer electronic such as smart phones through to high value but low volume products such as satellites.

The Manufacturing with Light funding was announced by Vince Cable MP (Secutary of State for Business Innovation and Skills) in Glasgow om 8th January 2014 and the project (which is a collaboration between Dr Neale and Prof Jon Cooper) will run from July 2014 for 18 months.
