Dr Dong Nguyen
- Lecturer in Educational Leadership (Educational Leadership & Policy)
Dong Nguyen is Lecturer in Educational Leadership at the School of Education, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom (UK). He is Programme Leader of two programmes: Masters' Programme in Professional Learning & Enquiry (Educational Leadership) and Postgraduate Certificate in Teacher Leadership & Learning.
Prior to this post, he was working as a Teacher in Vietnam and then as a Research Associate at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Glasgow, UK. He holds a two-year Master’s degree in International and Comparative Education from Stockholm University, Sweden and a Ph.D. degree in Educational Leadership from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
Dong Nguyen’s research interests include educational leadership and improvements, organisational education, and comparative education. He has conducted empirical research on educational leadership and change in Singapore, Sweden, and Vietnam.
Dong Nguyen is open to both quantitative methods (e.g., survey design) and qualitative methodologies (e.g., case study, ethnography, and grounded theory methodology). He is particularly keen on employing grounded theory as a methodology for theory building and a method for data analysis. He is interested in theorising individual, organisational and social processes.
Dong Nguyen’s doctoral research adopted grounded theory methodology to conceptualise the process of teachers leading change in the Singapore context. His study contributes a theoretical model of change engagement that describes and explains the process of teachers engaging their peers in planning, implementing, and diffusing educational initiatives in their schools. This model comprises four interrelated concepts (i.e., persuasion, modelling, collaboration, and trust). Persuasion, modelling, and collaboration represent three stages while trust plays a central role in the entire process of change engagement.
Dong Nguyen welcomes potential postgraduate students interested in undertaking research in the field of educational leadership, especially in the following areas:
- Educational change and improvements;
- Digital leadership;
- Leadership models (e.g., Instructional Leadership and Teacher Leadership);
- Theorising leadership / change processes.
Dong Nguyen is currently supervising two doctoral students and six master's students. He is open to invitations to serve as an examiner of doctoral/PhD theses focusing on the aforementioned areas of research.
Dong Nguyen mainly teaches courses within the Master’s programme in Professional Learning & Enquiry and Pg.Cert Teacher Leadership & Learning.
