Professor Allison Littlejohn

  • Professor (People, Place & Social Change)
  • Dean of Learning and Teaching (Social Sciences College Senior Management)

Biography

I am a learning scientist, specialising in professional and digital learning. My expertise is in applying educational theory and evidence to developing and evaluating complex interventions for professional learning which capitalise on the use of digital technologies. My work has made contributions to the understanding of how people learn for work in diverse contexts and cultures across the Energy, Finance, Health, Education and International Development sectors.

I have been awarded over 40 research grants funded by organisations including the Economic & Social Research Council, The European Commission, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Energy Institute, British Petroleum, the Higher Education Academy, Jisc, the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Scottish Funding Council.

My current research focuses on the role of professional learning in resolving global challenges. I am Academic Director for ‘Ways of Working and Learning in AMR surveillance systems in LMICs’funded by the UK Department for Health and Social Care’s Fleming Fund;  I lead research on professional learning for ‘Approaches in Complex and Challenging Environments for Sustainable Sexual & Reproductive Health’ (ACCESS), funded by the UK Department for International Development; and am Principal Investigator for ‘Learning From Incidents’, funded by the Energy Institute.

I have held research Chairs at four UK universities and have experience of strategic leadership in education, as Academic Director of Digital Innovation at the Open University (2015-2019), Founding Director of the Caledonian Academy at Glasgow Caledonian University (2006 – 2014), where I also served as Senior Researcher for Royal Dutch Shell (2008-2010), leading a partnership around Knowledge Innovation & Development.

I serve on the  editorial board of a number of influential journals, including The Internet and Higher Education and Vocations & Learning and am an external examiner for University College London (UCL) Institute of Education. I was appointed  as Visiting Professor at the Open University (2019-21), UK, the University of Oslo, Norway (2018), the University of Wollongong, Australia (2019) and Visiting  Researcher  (2016) at the Linnaeus Centre for Research on Learning, Interaction and Mediated Communication in Contemporary Society (LinCS), a national centre of excellence at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, funded by the Swedish Research Council.

Research interests

Global challenges affect the lives and well-being of people worldwide. I investigate how professional learning can help solve global challenges through developing and testing complex interventions. Examples of my work include:

  • slowing down AntiMicrobial Resistance (AMR), by enabling laboratory professionals in developing countries to rethink how their work is organised.
  • accelerating access to sexual & reproductive health rites in developing countries, by enabling health workers learn new practices.
  • support finance professionals in planning for uncertainty by supporting how they self-regulate their learning.
  • reducing accidents in the energy sector through learning from incidents.

I am also committed to public engagement and  knowledge exchange, working with people in a range of companies, professional organisations, government departments and NGOs to support the use of research to improve professional learning.
