An Exploration of the Emotional Response to Turkish Music in the Context of Effective Religious Education

Aim:

This research will focus critically on the emotions which might be affected by a certain type of Turkish music, on the understanding that this music can be used to express values and capture states of mind in the religious education class.

Therefore, the aim of the research is presented in two steps:

• to understand the pupils’ emotional response to Turkish music,
• to evaluate the current situation and future opportunities regarding the use of music in religious education.

Research Question:

For the above-mentioned aims, the researcher’s doctoral project is designed to analyse the situation in Turkey and Scotland. Why the project includes these countries is because both of them have similar religious education perspectives in the sense that religious education is state-funded. The difference is that there is a compulsory religious education class in Turkey whilst the Scottish system has Catholic denominational schools. Then, the research questions are (i) ‘how students in Turkey and Scotland emotionally respond Turkish music?’ and (ii) ‘how religious education professionals from Turkey and Scotland evaluate the place of music in religious education?’.

Research Interest

My research interest has a focus on religious education (RE). In this regard, I study values education, religion, morality, theology, and culture in relation to RE.
